What happens at a cremation?
A cremation service is often quite similar to a funeral where someone is buried; usually are attended by friends and family of the deceased and feature some form of ceremony (whether religious or not) which is led by an officiant. Features such as songs, readings and more can be chosen by the mourners to be as personal as possible for the one whose life they are celebrating. At a cremation, instead of the coffin being lowered into the ground in burial, at the end of the service it will be obscured from view with a curtain or taken to another room; the process of cremation will take place shortly thereafter, but away from the attended service – mourners will not be present for this part. Often both types of service will be followed by a wake; with a cremation, ashes can be kept or scattered in a place of the family’s choosing or perhaps placed in a garden of remembrance.
